It's an interesting article and while I naturally empathise with the lady in question, pub staff are under a lot of pressure to comply with licensing laws and there are big fines if they are serving to underage people. I would imagine it's a forseeable problem for the young transperson though I'm not sure what the solution is. However sensitively the staff act, they are bound by the law. I can't imagine police test-purchasers going to those lengths to catch out pub staff though!

I think the issue was that they humiliated the poor lass in front of her friends. Thye should have taken her aside and done a quick check without her wig. I do sort of sympathise with them trying to uphold the law, but equally they could have done it in a slightly more sensitive way.

I am starting to think that perhaps Marjorie Taylor Greene isn't an ally to the tran community. Apparantly the shortage of tampons and sanitary products in the USA is down to them being supplied in mens' toilets by the White House. This is the kind of theory that would be proposed in my workplace to promote a humerous, but implausible discussion to pass a few minutes. That an elected representitive is talking about it is worrying because the kind of people who will tell you not to beleieve anything in the media will soak up every word she utters as truth. Here is some satire poking fun at those who use us as scapegoats (if you are a right wing conspiracy theorist focus on the 'satire' bit). www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/society/war-famine-why-my-wife-left-me-five-things-that-are-the-fault-of-trans-women-according-to-newspaper-columnists-20220329219043

Oh MTG. Our transphobes are particularly dim over here. Sad thing is, there’s a lot of them :/

Oh MTG. Our transphobes are particularly dim over here. Sad thing is, there’s a lot of them :/ They do seem to be particularly vociferous. Mind you, one of our elected representitives (see if you can guess which party he comes from) has written to all the schools in his constituency to point out that being transgender is just a phase. Mine's lasted 50 odd years so far so I'm wondering when I'll snap out of it.

Yep. I mean every bit of research out there says virtual no one who identifies as trans for more than five years “grows out of it”. Doesn’t keep the bigots from spouting their own, wholly invented, statistics

You can't get a fag paper between any of the three major parties these days. Mick Lynch as President of the Republic... hmm, that'd do for me. Well, a girl can dream...

I'm sure you've all heard the news from the US today. In a concurring opinion, Justice Thomas opined that we should "re-examine" rulings guaranteeing access to birth control, same sex marriage and same sex relationships period.
Make no mistake, transgender healthcare is probably next on the chopping block. States are already restricting it for children-- even just counseling.
Maddy is truly mad today. In the American sense of the word.

I share your anger and I'm not a citizen. It seems to me that the evangelical right wing is using its financial muscle to buy the GOP.

I share your anger and I'm not a citizen. It seems to me that the evangelical right wing is using its financial muscle to buy the GOP. Thing is, the GOP is actually really fragile. At its core, it’s basically the plutocratic party, dedicated to slashing taxes for the upper 1% and getting rid of regulations on corporations, be it environmental, workplace safety or compliance with the RLA. That’s not a great sell for most Americans so they brought on board the culture wars with its religious, racial and cultural bigotries. Thanks to the bizarre electoral system we have here, that 30% is enough to own the government. Keep in mind, our Senate and electoral college were designed to give outsized power to the slave states to bring them on board during the early Post revolution days. To give you a feeling for how this affects things, on the current court five out of nine justices were appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote. I just feel sick.

I am livid today. This week, Miranda was gutted, open carry of weapons was made the law of the land and now women are going to be forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term. And how does the "leadership" of my party respond? With poems (Google 'Pelosi abortion poem') and singing on the steps of the Capitol. I hate the Republicans and for what they stand, but they understood and understand what was needed. While the Dems spent 40 years jerking off to a sociopath (with the brief Obama interregnum) and his wife, the GOP packed legislatures (fed and state) and created the Federalist Society to create a network of lawyers and judges.
Next up, besides gay rights is going to be a dismantling of the administrative state, of environmental regulations. We are heading to the abyss.

One of the most disappointing things about this is how political the Supreme Court has become. To choose judges at any level by their political views seems outrageous.

One of the most disappointing things about this is how political the Supreme Court has become. To choose judges at any level by their political views seems outrageous. Over here, judges are either chosen by vote or, in the case of federal judges, appointed by the party in power. What's happened recently is the death of the moderate Republican. As a result, an inherently political process has become extremist.
