When not busy ironing the crockery, microwaving the curtains, putting Anna's lingerie in the dishwasher, etc, your super-efficient maid likes to take a moment or two to trawl the waters of the Brazilian brook for worthwhile tales. As with FM, this involves wading through bilge to find the gems, but it's a darned good excuse to wear thigh boots Anyway, quite often, decent stories are offered free of charge; sometimes long term, sometimes just for a day or two. Therefore, I thought I'd set up a thread devoted to freebies - these aren't recommendations as such, as I won't have had time to read them before posting in order to bring them to your attention while they're still free. This one seems a good one with which to get the ball rolling: Collette

Seems like that link goes nowhere. A blank page?

It must be because it's no longer free. Try this link instead: Collette

Seems like that link goes nowhere. A blank page? Sometimes the maid gets so ditzy she thinks a blank page is her autobiography.

One cat on the forum is quite enough, thank you!

Categorised as 'Young Adult', I found this to be an enjoyable yarn (even though I paid for it at the time ): Having Her BackFor those outside the UK, it's by Ann Gallagher, if you want to search for it on your country's Amazon site.

I picked this one up a while back, but still haven't got around to reading it. The synopsis suggests it might be enjoyable and it's currently on offer freely again: The Definition of NormalFor those for whom the link doesn't work, it's by ES Carpenter. There's also a follow-up, The Definition of Equal, which pops up FOC now and again.

Battle for Atlantis by Scott Marcy Shannon’s world fell apart in a single day, and how it came back together is the stuff of legends. Transformed from a man into a female elve, Shannon fights a desperate battle for survival in New York City. Join her as she and her friends uncover hidden threats, awaken race memories, and clash with mutinous Daemia. They battle to save the Atlantean people and recover their lost homeland — Atlantis — their only hope.

I don't know whether to recommend this one or not: Sibling RivalryMy indecision isn't just because I haven't read it yet, but also... well... rozzers and transgender characters? Sounds a bit silly to me...

Sounds a bit silly to me... Downloaded it, didn't like it. If anybody wants to write a police procedural watch Scott and Bailey first. There you'll see some real characters busting all the clichés. I never yet met a scruffy detective. If you go to a hanging nobody cares if the body is cut down as long at you don't disturb the knots. The only thing this tale has over your work, Ms Bowman is that it's finished.
